Tree Planting - caring for our environment

Now we are an Enviro School we were given the opportunity to help with the improvement of the stream along the Willow Walkway through the programme called Wild Life Habitat in school.

Our class helped to plant the area just after the ford crossing on the corner outside St Joseph's Junior school.  We planted a New Zealand native grass called Anemanthele lessoniana, better known as NZ wind grass.  The students did an amazing job, with the help of Rob, Rick and three Year 13 Nelson College students.  Digging was pretty tough in places, trying to overcome rocky ground and tree roots.  But we soldiered through.

We know the work we have done will help care for our environment, attracting more wildlife and providing us with quality air to breathe.  The plants on the bank of the stream will give the aquatic life in the water a more attractive habitat, providing shade and places to hide from predators, as well as attracting more food.

We are the guardians of our waterways and it is our responsibility to keep them healthy.  We have helped that to happen today.  Ka Pai, Akomanga Iwa!!
