Week 4 in Room 9

This week Room 9 is hosting the Syndicate at Wa Whanau, which is a gathering twice a week to share notices, tikanga Maori, including Kupu o te wiki (word of the week) and sing our waiata together.  This meeting time, and our assembly every fortnight, is led by our tamariki.

The children are a little nervous, speaking in front of everyone, but do extremely well.  Assemblies are also a time where certificates are presented by the teachers.  Ka pai Pohutukawa Syndicate!

On Tuesday we had a visit from Hayly who will visit us every week this term to teach
us a little bit about Mandarin and Chinese culture.  We can say hello in Mandarin - Nǐ hǎo - and are learning how to say goodbye too - Zàijiàn.

Swimming was a very welcome sight for most of us as the weather has been so hot! Room 9 are demonstrating awesome water confidence and skills in the pool. At the end of the week we were treated to a swim with the other Syndicate classes in the big pool. Remember swimming is every day except Mondays for another few weeks, so please bring your togs.

Discovery Time a real hit

On Friday mornings Room 9 practise their Key Competencies. We work as a team to relate well to each other. This includes listening to others, helping if someone needs help and working together, using our imagination. This video shows how well we can do this already!

Here are some more photos from today's Discovery Time.

Room 9 are pretty good at relating to each other in a positive way.  I hope you enjoy the creations that come home.  Remember we are always on the scrounge for recycled boxes and pots.

Statistics in Room 9

The Room 9 students have been learning all about Statistics.  We are counting in 5s and recording tally marks to collect information from our friends.  We had fun using the donut technique to ask our friends which fruit is their favourite.

We are learning how to display this data onto a bar graph and make a comment about what we discover.  Here we are displaying how we come to school.

Our Self Portraits, Dr Seuss style

This year, the theme for Nelson Central School is from the Dr Seuss book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

You have brains in
your head,

You have feet in
your shoes.

You can steer
yourself any
direction you choose.

Check out this story on-line here and have a chat to your child about how they are in charge of their own learning.  By taking opportunities when they are presented to them they will be able to go far.

We had fun adding some Cat in the Hat hats to the wonderful self portraits we created.  These are displayed in class, or you can have a look at our art on this photo montage.

Homework begins ...

Following some testing that has been carried out over the last few weeks, your child has been placed in a reading and spelling group.  These groups are fluid and are designed to meet the needs of the children.

The children will generally come home with a reading book to share.  Please enjoy this time with your child when they should be able to ;show off' their reading to you.  We also ask that you encourage them to learn a few words each night for their spelling and one basic fact they either didn't get to answer or got wrong in the Friday test.

Extra homework, for those students who have time / the inclination, can be found on the weekly newsletter in your communication book or on this Blog.

Getting to know each other in Week 1

Nelson Central School began the week with a Mihi Whakatau to welcome the new tamariki and kaiako to our school.  A special welcome to our 'newbie' in Room 9.

In Room 9, for the first week of the year, we have been getting to know each other and the classroom.  We have had a fun week.  We played Bingo discovering lots of things about each other we didn't already know.  Then we worked together to find where things are in the classroom.

We have wowed Kathryn with what we can do in maths and in the swimming pool.  We even got together as a Syndicate for some fun games and sports.

Check out these photos and feel free to leave a comment!!
