Hockey Skills was a hit

This term we have had the opportunity to have 3 sessions with Darren from Nelson Hockey, teaching us the basic skills of hockey.  We learned about the hockey haka, how we hold the hockey stick and how to dribble the ball safely while we stay in control!

I think you will agree that Room 9 students are already pretty expert at this - watch out Black Sticks!!

If your child is interested in taking up hockey, Nelson Hockey are offering sessions in Term 2 on a Thursday between 4.30pm and 5.15pm.

Purple Cake Day was a success thanks to YOU

Today, the whole of Nelson Central School got behind the worthy cause we have come to think of as our own -
PURPLE CAKE DAY

Thank you to everyone who helped make today a success, either by baking delicious cup cakes and biscuits, or sending money to school with your child.  We were amazed at how successful our cake stall was, raising $714.70 alone!!

The rest of the school also did their part, selling lemonade (Kahikatea), face-painting (Kowhai), loom bands, a wheels day (Totara) as well as lunchtime swims organised by Te Pouahi.

Mandarin Lessons

Room 9 students are very enthusiastic about having the opportunity to learn Mandarin once a week with Hayley.  We are learning how to greet people, count to 10, and this week we even learned some different fruits.

We love playing the fun games Hayley does with us to help us to learn this language.

NCS is an Enviroschool!!

We are very proud to announce that Nelson Central has become part of the Enviroschools programme.  Our community is showing a commitment to foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably.

The Enviroschools programme supports children and young people to plan, design and implement sustainability actions that are important to them and their communities.  The Nelson Central School teachers are on the hunt for an Enviro-Agent from Room 9.  An application must be made to Lynley, in Room 12 for someone to be considered.  The Enviro-Agent would attend meetings and be "our class voice" on the team.
Applications must be in by the end of week 9 of term 1, Friday 25th March.  More information can be viewed on the official website.
Good luck!

Our Room 9 Garden

We have been busy in Room 9, planting some vegetables and herbs, in our very own garden.  Each week two students are responsible for keeping the garden watered and weeded.  This responsibility needs to be taken seriously as we would love to have some produce to share once the plants have had time to grow.

Here it is in all its glory!

Weetbix Tryathlon

On Sunday, Room 9 had three active members who completed the Weetbix Kid's Tryathlon.  Here they are proudly wearing their gold medals and t-shirts.

There were also some great recounts of the event.

Jesse wrote - I went to the Weetbix Kids Tryathlon.  I went swimming, biking and running.  I loved the crunchy honey weetbix.  I saw my sister and my nan.  I parked my bike.

Finn wrote - I did a Tryathlon!  I had to wake up very early for it.  I had to do swimming and biking and running.  I got a medal!  It was fun.  I wonder if I will do it next year?

Tom wrote - In the weekend I went to the Weetbix Kids Tryathlon.  We had to do three things.  My favourite thing was everything.  I had KFC.  I got the microphones.  The hardest thing was swimming.  I got a medal.  Well, not I just got a medal, every kid got a medal.  After that I got a hat and a drink bottle and one small ball and one big ball.
