Welcome to Week 9, final week of Term 3

Wow, I can’t believe that it is the end of term already!  I want to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and enjoyable holidays.  Hopefully the weather will be kind to us.  We’ll look forward to seeing you back on Monday, 10th October.

SUN SAFE PLAY
The Cancer Society suggest that sunhats are a must to keep us safe from the harsh rays of the sun from the start of September.  We are encouraging our children to wear a wide brimmed hat when they are out in the sun from this week.  It is compulsory from next term – no hat, play in the shade.  School hats can be bought from the office in a variety of colours or you can provide your own.  Sorry, no caps are allowed.

READING – PLAY PERFORMANCES
All the students have been given a part in a play and these will be performed on Friday afternoon from 2.15pm. Parents, caregivers and siblings are welcome to come along and watch.  Your child may need help preparing a costume for his / her part.  We will make masks where appropriate in class but any other requirements, feel free to do at home!

WATER CYCLE
The children have been learning about the cycle of water and their learning will be shown on Seesaw, with posts being made this week.  If you haven’t yet subscribed to this feel free to email me for a QR code.  Feel free to comment!

LIBRARY BOOKS

Please return ALL library books by Wednesday of this week.  Thank you!

Orders must be in by THIS WEDNESDAY.  Thank you to those families who have already supported the SCG fundraiser by placing an order.  Remember you can view your child’s art on the Blog or by popping in to the classroom.  Thank you!

MUSIC WITH FRANCES – YOU ARE INVITED
The children have been really enjoying the specialist teaching Frances Rae has been providing each week.  To celebrate what they have learned we would like to invite you to the Arts Centre on Thursday, 15th September at 12.10pm.  The children will perform a short concert to demonstrate their learning.  Frances runs a percussion group at the School of Music on a Monday afternoon after school.  This is free of charge and she would love to see more students there.

DISCOVERY TIME
The children love Fridays when they get to use and practise key competencies, such as relating to others, managing self and thinking.  Please keep the recycled items coming in.  Small packet boxes, yoghurt containers, bottle tops are ideal to help make those creations come together.  Please make sure all items are thoroughly washed and free of any food before bringing them to school.  Thank you!

READING – PLAY PERFORMANCES
The students will be performing a play in the last week of term.   They will be bringing home the play to practise.  Look out in next week’s newsletter when they will be performed.

Welcome to Week 5 of Term 3

LOST PROPERTY
Last week Bianca lost a padded sleeveless vest that is navy, pale pink and fuschia pink.  If anyone has accidentally taken it home, please bring it back to Room 9.  As the member of staff responsible for lost property I would LOVE to see all clothing named so we can make sure it gets back to the rightful owner.

CALENDAR ART
Your child’s art will be ready to view at the start of next week and order forms will be sent home with your child.  I will also put a photo of the artwork on our Blog so if you cannot get into the classroom to see the original you are able to view it here.  Orders must be in by Wednesday, 14th September.

FUTSAL SKILLS
This week we will have our last Futsal Skills session with Ben Wright.  Please make sure your child has suitable sports shoes on Wednesday.

OLYMPIC GAMES
New Zealand did so well at the Olympic Games – I hope you enjoyed watching the events.  This week we will be preparing for the Pohutukawa Olympics.  We need to have our own Anthem and an encouraging chant.  We will be brainstorming in class but would love some ‘parent’ input as well!

MATHS – TIME
We are continuing to learn about time this week.  Talk to your child about the change in seasons as we see the signs of Spring arriving.  Ask them to tell you the time using an analogue clock to the hour, or half hour.

**********************************
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 3

CALENDAR ART
Our calendar art is well on its way with the children working hard to produce wonderful collages.  The order forms will be sent home with your child from Week 5 onwards.  This is a great fundraiser for our school so please consider ordering. J
SPELLING
The new programme, Alpha to Omega, has been running since the beginning of last week.  The children have been assessed and are going to one of the teachers in our Syndicate.  From next week I will endeavour to send home spelling words for your child to learn which will reinforce the spelling pattern being taught.  Please support your child with learning these words and they will be tested on Fridays.
FUTSAL SKILLS
Futsal Skills continue for the next two weeks.  Please make sure your child has suitable sports shoes on Wednesdays.
OLYMPIC GAMES
It is getting closer to the “Pohutukawa Syndicate” Olympic Games (happening Week 6, on Thursday 1st September).  Room 9 has a list of ideas for the sport we will ‘host’ at the Games.  We will vote at the end of this week for the winning event and will need to source or create the equipment needed.
ROOM 9 BLOG
Thank you to those of you who read our Blog and leave comments.  Your child is ‘rewarded’ for your efforts with a move up the peg chart if you leave a comment for us, so it’s worth going on!

**********************************

Welcome to Week 3 of Term 3

We had a busy time in Room 9 last week.  Tree planting, Futsal, No Child Left Inside and Music as well as all our other learning!  And then to top it all off the Olympic Games has begun!

FUTSAL SKILLS
This week we will be having Futsal skills on Wednesday at 12pm.  Please make sure your child wears suitable closed in shoes for this session.

TOPIC MATHS – TIME DIARY
This term we are learning all about time.  One afternoon at home this week I would like your child to record what they are doing on the hour and half-hour from when they get home until 6 o’clock. The diary form asks them to either draw the hands on the analogue clock or write the time on the digital clock. They can either draw a picture or write what they are doing.

OLYMPIC GAMES
We have been learning about the Olympic Games in class.  In a few weeks we will be having a “Pohutukawa Syndicate” Olympic Games.  Room 9 needs to decide what country we will be and what sport we will choose to compete in against the other classrooms.  We will need to source or create any equipment we will need for this event.  The country and sport can be made up or be one from the Games.  I am setting the children a challenge to see if they can come up with a Room 9 anthem, so it would be great to have some discussions around this at home!  We will vote on our favourite nearer to the time.

ROOM 9 BLOG
There has been some new activity on our Blog.  Please leave us a comment on one of our latest posts – it’s easy!  Select “anonymous” but remember to add your name to your message so we know who it is from.

Welcome to Week 2 of Term 3

WHAT’S ON IN ROOM 9
We have a few things happening in class over the next few weeks so thought I would list them so you can help your child stay organised!

TUESDAY, 9am – Habitat in Schools Tree Planting
 - bring gumboots / change of shoes and warm clothing.
TUESDAY, 1.30 – Futsal Skills - suitable sports shoes needed
THURSDAY, 7pm – Year 3 parents only – Camp meeting in the Library
FRIDAY, 3.15 – Catch up Student Led Conferences for families who were away last term.

TREE PLANTING – HABITAT IN SCHOOLS
Rick Field from the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary will be joining Room 9 on Tuesday morning to help us begin to establish the environmental corridor to encourage native birds and other wildlife into our city.  PLEASE help your child to remember warm clothing – gloves, beanie, jacket – and a change of shoes / gumboots as we might get muddy!
FUTSAL SKILLS – THIS TUESDAY
Please make sure your child is wearing suitable sports shoes for Futsal on Tuesday.  We will be having 4 sessions this term over the coming weeks.  From next week the sessions will be on Wednesdays.
MUSIC
The sessions with Frances Rae, a specialist music teacher, will be starting this week, on Thursday morning at 9am.  I am sure the children will benefit from her expertise.
INQUIRY – THE OLYMPIC GAMES
One of our Inquiry Topics this term is relating to the Olympic Games.  We will be looking at setting goals and aiming high, thinking about what you need to do to become an Olympic athlete.  Please talk to your child about your knowledge of the Olympic Games and enjoy the build up to the start this Friday.

************************************

Welcome to Week 1 of Term 3
Welcome back to school after, what I hope, was a relaxing and enjoyable few weeks.  I want to take this opportunity to welcome Maxx Squires and his family, and Mikaela Durand and her family to our classroom.  Please introduce yourself and I am sure they will settle in really quickly.

CHANGES TO NEWSTIME
This term we will be running the news sessions a little differently.  Oral Language is an important skill to develop and I feel the children are ready to take this to the next level!  On Fridays your child will be able to bring along some personal news to share within their group.  However, on the other days we will be choosing one reporter each day to share a current events story.  You will be asked to help your child prepare for this when it is their turn.  Up to a week will be given to plan what they might share.  I hope the children will find this a fun activity that helps them increase their confidence in front of the class.  Please let me know if you need any support.

MUSIC
This term Frances Rae, a specialist music teacher, will be taking the class for music during my classroom release time.  This will be on Thursday mornings, starting in Week 2 for 6 sessions.  I am sure the children will benefit from her expertise.

CHOIR
Good luck to our Year 3 singers who will be performing in the Masquerade in Morrison Square this Thursday as part of the school choir.  How exciting for you!

WILDLIFE HABITAT IN SCHOOLS – TREE PLANTING

Next Tuesday (2nd August) we will be helping with a project to encourage birdlife into our school.  Rick from the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary will be explaining how we can do this through planting in our school grounds.  Please ensure your child has warm clothing, gloves and a hat as we will be heading out to help with this first thing.

Welcome to Week 9 of Term 2

I was a bit premature with my plan to return last week, but am hoping to be back now for the rest of the term.  This week will be the last swimming session at Riverside.

SUTER ART GALLERY
Thank you to the wonderful parents who walked with us today to the Library for our Suter art session with Esther – My Many Coloured Days.  Without your support these trips would not be possible.

STUDENT LED INTERVIEWS – Thursday, 7th July
There have only been a few families to book times for the Student Led interviews.  Please book your interview time on the website www.schoolinterviews.co.nz this week by entering the school code j8b9d.  The interviews will be student led and last approximately 30 minutes.  A number of different learning stations will be set up for your child to demonstrate what they can do.  I will be taking on a support role during the interviews.   If you have problems booking your time, please let me know.

MID YEAR REPORTS
The reports were due to be sent out to parents at the end of this week.  As I have been away, regretfully I will not have them completed by this date.  I will endeavour to send them home with your child by the end of term.  Thank you for your understanding.

READING / WRITING - INFORMATION REPORTS
In the newsletter last week I asked you to help your child research an animal they may like to do an information report on.  We will be doing these over the next few weeks.  If you find any images / interesting facts you would like to email through to me I am happy to print these off for your child to include in their published report.  Reading will have an information report focus this week, which may mean your child does not bring home their usual reading.

******************************

Welcome to Week 7 of Term 2
Well, I’m still writing this from my ‘sick bed’ but hope that the antibiotics will do their job and I’ll be back early in the week.  Peggy had nothing but praise for the children’s behaviour last week – they are such a great bunch!

CROSS COUNTRY – THIS FRIDAY 1.15PM
This Friday the school will hold the annual School Cross Country Races.  A separate notice is attached, requesting helpers for the afternoon’s event.  This was due back by the end of today but if you are able to marshal or record I am sure Sheryll will be very grateful of your name, despite it being late.  I apologise for previously notifying you of the wrong start time.  The races will begin after an early lunch break at 1.15pm.  We’ll look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible and hope to have a dry week so we can cram in the training sessions!

PARENT HELPERS
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful parents who have been helping in the classroom at reading time since the start of the year.  I am conscious that this is a big time commitment but is one I really appreciate.  Please see me if you would like to help / have a break from it for a while.  J

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS
This is a reminder that your child needs to be reading every day.  This will either be the book they bring home from school, or 10 – 15 minutes from a book of their choice.  Discussions around what they read, encouraging your child to retell the story / answer questions about what they have read are vital in helping your child comprehend what they read.
For maths practice, allowing your child to do some basic facts questions, either from the printed sheets you can obtain from the Blog, or on the Sumdog site is also expected.

Please check out our Blog for the latest happenings in Room 9.  This will be updated regularly (usually weekly) and is a good place for the children to play educational games, get their spelling words and basic facts sheets, as well as copies of our newsletters and notices.

READING
This week I will be continuing to test the children for reading groups and spelling.  Your child may come home with an easy book to read from the class.  Our reading programme will start properly in the next week or two.
Please see me if you have any questions.
Thanks for your support, Kathryn
